Mount Rainier Summit Climb
Having the right equipment is critical for making the most of your alpine course. You must come equipped with all items on the gear lists. To help you with gear selection, we've included examples of products of a standard that would be suitable.
CLOTHING LIST
WATERPROOF/ BREATHABLE Pants- GoreTex, side zippers are preferable
Gloves/Mittens- WATERPROOF and well insulated, can be a combination of
shell / liners
Glove Liners- Synthetic polypropylene or wool, many is better than few
Warm Socks- 2-3 pairs synthetic, wool, or synthetic wool blends
(NO COTTON)
Liner Socks- 1-2 pairs (if you wear liner socks) synthetic or wool
(NO COTTON)
Warm Hat- Fleece or wool, to cover the ears and must be able to fit under
your helmet (NO COTTON)
Face Mask or Balaclava- Thin synthetic or wool to fit under helmet
Gaiters- To the knee, front velcro closure, and strap under boot coated nylon
or Gore-Tex (ie Outdoor Research Crocodiles)
Wide Brimmed Hat- Or baseball type with flaps down the back, white is best
Bandana- Very handy
Shorts- Synthetic fabric NO COTTON, it can be hot on glaciers

EQUIPMENT LIST
Mountaineering Boots- Well broken-in leather crampon compatible mountaineering boots, ie Montrail Verglas or Coulior; OR double plastic boots Koflach Viva Soft or Degre; Scarpa Inverno.
Crampons- 12 Points Semi-rigid or flexible fitted to boots, ie Grivel G12; Charlet Moser Super 12 Lainard.
Ice Axe- 60cm to 75cm with leash
Climbing Helmet- UIAA approved only, ie Petzel Ecrin Roc
Headlamp- with extra batteries and bulb, to fit on helmet, ie Petzel Zoom
Climbing Harness- Mountaineering style with adjustable leg loops, ie Black Diamond Alpine Bod. Your harness must be less than three years old.
Carabiners- 2 Large Pear locking and 4 ovals or 4 straight gate "D’s"
Pulley- 1 crevasse rescue type, UIAA approved only
6mm prussik cord- 1 (5 foot), 1 (13 foot) new untied
7mm cord- 1 (20 foot) new untied
Belay device- pyramid type or figure eight
Internal Frame Backpack- At least 5000 cubic inch capacity, oriented toward
mountaineering and backpacking
H2O Proof Cover for Pack- 2 large garbage bags will substitute
Sleeping Bag- Down or synthetic rated to 0 to 10 degrees F
Full length Sleeping Pad- Closed cell foam, or self inflating pad (with patch
kit)
Personal Toiletries- Toothbrush, toothpaste, sample size deodorant, etc
Personal utensils- Bowl, insulated cup, and spoon
Personal First Aid Kit- Moleskin, band aids aspirin, etc
Small knife- Small pocketknife or small multi tool
Glacier Glasses- 100% UV, side shields, at most 15% light transmission
Sunscreen- SPF 25+, sweat proof, waterproof
Lip Balm- with SPF 25+
Adjustable Trekking Poles- Relieves strain on knees
Optional Items
Camera and Film- Small point and shoot or disposable w/ flash
Small Binoculars- Compact and lightweight
